For Christmas, we were kinda stumped on a family gift that all our girls would like, that we would like too. (We quickly ruled out pets or anything that we would have to take care of.) Instead we gave them a Year of Fun!
Each month we have an adventure or outing planned, and this month it was the Phoenix Zoo. The girls and Kirk had MLK day off, and it was a little overcast and a perfect day to go.
Sadly, most of the animals were busy sleeping or eating far away, but it's still so cool to see real live animals like giraffes, zebras and lions in their semi-natural environment.
The girls loved carrying around the map and finding where we were at each stop. They also liked reading about each animal and their diet and habitat.
Noelle, Liz and Brynn thought that riding a camel would be an awesome adventure, until he came to pick them up in line and he went to the bathroom right as they got on. They basically just rode around the little desert roundabout a couple times and then they were done. But they didn't get spit on, so it was a success.
Marissa and Kirk decided to feed the giraffes. Marissa thought it was cool that the giraffe's tongue was slimy and purple. She now wants a pet giraffe.
The spider monkey exhibit was pretty cool, you get to go inside this enclosure with them just jumping from one tree branch to another. I think Marissa was freaked out that one was going to jump on her neck. The girls were pretty impressed when Kirk told them he had a pet monkey on his mission that looked like these monkeys.
The petting zoo was one of the favorites. Brynn is an animal lover and just sat and petted the goats for as long as they would let them. Noelle said that she was a goat whisperer and went around trying to tame the already tame goats.
It was so much fun! The girls were happy the whole time and as I saw screaming kids throwing fits at the end of a long zoo day, I was happy that my girls are older now and we can just enjoy things like this. We're excited for the rest of the year's adventures as we spend time together!

What a great idea! Was one of your NY Resolutions to keep blogging? I hope so because I love keeping up with your family. Your girls are all so old and beautiful. WE loved seeing them on the Christmas card!
You did go all out on this, because we know it costs extra to ride the camel and have a giraffe lick. Glad there we no tantrums at the end too. Maybe your girls can follow Beth's example and work at the zoo in a couple of years.
Your outing sounds really fun, especially compared to our most recent attempt at a fun outing (you'll have to read Nat's most recent blog post). Your girls are such cute animal lovers... must come from Kirk's side of the family! So... maybe a rodeo in Tucson for February? No pressure...
